History
Fortis watches are like space and time are linked together as tightly as air and breathing, and nowhere more so than in the factories of Swiss watchmaker Fortis.

Founded in 1912, Fortis has been making watches for the astronauts of our world for generations. Responsible also for the world’s first self-winding wristwatch in the same year, Fortis entered the Swiss watch making industry with a bang.

Fortis is a company that likes to do things that will be noticed. From their decorative Fortis watches to their choices of how to celebrate occasions, they really know how to grab the attention of their consumers and contemporaries alike. For example, in order to celebrate their 25th anniversary, Fortis started producing first class chronograph watches.

In 1954, Fortis watches won the Chronometer award, highlighting the high standards of their first water-resistant Alarm Chronometer watch. By their 75th anniversary, Fortis are presented with the Design Award in Hanover, setting a trend with their new edition of the Flieger Collection.

However, Fortis really comes into its own when it takes its first steps into space. The Space-Art Edition watch is taken onboard the first art painted spacecraft, a Russian Proton rocket. Later, the official Cosmonauts Chronograph is chosen to be part of the “Yuri Gagarin Russian State Scientific-Research Test Centre of Cosmonauts Training” cosmonauts´ official equipment.
